當老外說”answer call of nature”,別天真問誰打給他,因為他要去…啦

會議進行到一半,外籍同事Wilson忽然轉頭小聲告訴志明他必須去 ”answer call of nature”,由於接下來就輪到他們這個部門上台做簡報,志明很不希望Wilson離席,忍不住追問:”Who’s calling you?Could you call him back after the presentation?” 只見對方面有難色,說了句:”Sorry, I really need to relieve myself. I’ll be right back.” 就企業貸款迅速走出去,留下志明一臉困惑……

”call of nature” 可不是什麼大自然的呼喚,”relieve oneself” 也不是放輕鬆一下,這兩個用語都是「上廁所」的文雅說法:

Could you excuse me for a minute?Nature calls.
(可以容我離開一下嗎?去個洗手間。)

I need to relieve myself. Could you please wait here?
(我需要去上廁所,請你在這裡等一下好嗎?)

此外,如果聽到英美人士說:”I have to go.” 而沒有進一步解釋時,就別傻傻追問:”Where are you going?” 因為對方多半表示「失陪一下」,要去上廁所,而非真的要離開。

其他關於「上廁所」的委婉說法,還有:

1. I’m going to use the bathroom/washroom/lavatory.
(我要去用一下洗手間。)

2. Please show me the men’s/gent’s room.
(請告訴我男廁的位置。)

3. Could you tell me where the women’s/ladies’ room is please?
(可以請你告訴我化妝間在哪裡嗎?)

4.Allow me to powder my nose.
(容我去補個妝。)

假設在某些特殊情境中,需要明確說出要去上大號還是小號,卻又不想把shit、piss等字眼說出口,你也可以這麼講:

For the examination, he needs to make a bowel movement.
(為了作檢查,他需要去排便。)

說明:bowel是「腸」,bowel movement就是「腸子的活動」,也就是「解大便」的斯文說法。

I’ve got to find a place for my son to make water as soon as possible.
(我得盡快幫我兒子找個地方小便。)

說明:make water、pass water,或前述的relieve oneself都是「小便」的意思。
